Heart of Darkness & Selections from the Congo Diary by Joseph Conrad, X
With an Introduction by Caryl Phillips Commentary by H.L. Mencken, E.M. Forster, Virginia Woolf, Ernest Hemingway, Bertrand Russell, Lionel Trilling, Chiua Achebe, 0f diary h.l mencken and Philip Gourevitch "Heart of Darkness," which appeared at the very beginning of our century, was a Cassandra cry announcing the end of Victorian Europe, on the verge of transforming itself into the Europe of violence," wrote the critic Czeslaw Milosz. Originally published in 1902, Heart of Darkness remains one of this century's most enduring--and harrowing--works of fiction. Written several years after Conrad's grueling sojourn in the Belgian Congo, the novel tells the story of Marlow, a seaman who undertakes his own journey into the African jungle to find the tormented white trader Kurtz. Rich in irony 0f diary h.l mencken and spellbinding prose, Heart of Darkness is a complex meditation on colonialism, evil, 0f diary h.l mencken and the thin line between civilization 0f diary h.l mencken and barbarity. This edition contains selections from Conrad's Congo Diary of 1890--the first notes, in effect, for the novel which was composed at the end of that decade. Virginia Woolf wrote of Conrad, "His books are full of moments of vision. They light up a whole character in a flash. . . . He could not write badly, one feels, to save his life.

Daily Modernism: The Literary Diaries of Virginia Woolf, Antonia White, Elizabeth Smart, and Anais Nin by Elizabeth Podnieks, X
In contrast to autobiographies, which are intended for a public audience 0f diary h.l mencken and can be read as a novel, diaries have traditionally been thought of as the private record of a person's life. In Daily Modernism Elizabeth Podnieks shows that the diary can 0f diary h.l mencken and should be read as both autobiography 0f diary h.l mencken and fiction. Redrawing established boundaries between genres, Podnieks builds a broad critical 0f diary h.l mencken and theoretical range on which she maps the diary as an aesthetic work, showing how diaries inscribe the aesthetics of literary modernisms. Drawing on feminist theory, literary history, biography, 0f diary h.l mencken and personal anecdotes, she argues that the diary is an especially subversive space for women writers. Podnieks details how Virginia Woolf, Antonia White, Elizabeth Smart, 0f diary h.l mencken and Anais Nin wrote their diaries under the pretence that they were private, while always intending them to be published. She travelled extensively to examine the original diary manuscripts 0f diary h.l mencken and offers unique first-hand descriptions of the manuscripts that underscore the artistic intentions of their authors. Daily Modernism contributes to the ongoing feminist revision of literary history and, in its disruption of traditional concepts of "major" 0f diary h.l mencken and "minor" literary forms, paves the way for a much needed reconsideration of the diary as a valid literary achievement.
